I had a rare opportunity to teach the morning sessions of a fifth grade science class. Geology and groundwater are a passion of mine, so I get excited any chance I get to discuss the subject. The students were very attentive and asked a lot of questions. The course was three hours, which would normally seem like a long time, went by very fast. My assistant Lana Straub and I presented some of the basic laws and theories of geology, basic hydrology along with groundwater sampling and sand grain analysis under a microscope.
I believe it is important to support and promote the sciences in our public schools. Far too much emphasis is placed on extra curricular activities and not enough on the core disciplines of language arts, mathematics, science and art. So fellow scientists get involved with public education, visit your local public school and help ignite the passion of learning within our future scientists.
